Dear Parents,
Deciding to hire a tutor for your son or daughter is a complicated
process. As a tutor with experience in the market over the past four
years, perhaps I can help you along the way. You want to hire someone
good but the payments can be huge. How can you tell if the tutor will be
effective? What should the final product look like?
I believe that effective tutoring is not complicated. You don't necessarily have to have long
periods of lecturing or testing. Rather, the most efficient way to bring
a student's grades up is to solve problems. With the recent rise of
start-up tutoring centers, one can easily be led into something that is
ultimately not improving on the student's skills.
Lecturing vs. Problem Solving:
I constantly see discouraged students not being able to advance given
the one-way lecturing in a class, whether it be their school classrooms
or commercial tutorials with more than one student per class. What I've
learned is that they need to be guided through specific problems.
Through one-on-one sessions with a
private tutor, they can be continually guided through actual problems as
they might appear on the tests. One effective procedure I use is to
create an identical and analogous problem as a follow-up activity, to
see if the student can do it effectively.
Solving problems under my supervision will allow their natural abilities to
follow through, with regards to the various "scripts" that each problem is characterized of.
This aggressive dismantling of problems, or focused walk-throughs, will
show your child that within each question lies all that is
needed to come to a solution. And this will happen for sure if you hire me since I was
never shown a problem that I couldn't solve.
Before you even begin tutoring there are many steps you can take to
achieve results. Go to (** call for the link) and click on K-12 testing.
Print out tests that match your grade level, such as Regents, including
answer key. This is FREE and will get you very ahead. It's only if you
have a long list of unanswered problems that you will need someone to
show you how to answer it.
Make sure your reading level is high. Read NY Times or Wall Street
Journal regularly. Make note cards for vocabulary, that you can carry
and flip through at your leisure.
When you have a tutor, one great way to get things ahead is by looking
at previous tests that you did poorly in. Make the tutor solve all the
wrong problems. It's important to study and tutor strategically.
